The SF Giants made a modest change to the coaching staff by reassigning assistant pitching coach Christian Wonders. As it turns out, he will take over as the new Director of Pitching.

Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic shared the news earlier this week that Frank Anderson would shift to an assistant pitching coach role. In 2026, he served as the Director of Major League Pitching.

The Giants want Justin Meccage to be the top pitching voice on the coaching staff, so they shuffled the deck to avoid confusion. I suppose one way to read between the lines of this shakeup was that Giants pitchers got conflicting messages from Meccage and Anderson, as they both held top pitching roles on the coaching staff.

Now, Meccage is leading the charge. Presumably, what he says will filter down to Anderson. On the other hand, Baggarly also noted that Christian Wonders would assume a "high-profile role in the farm system."

That role is now known, as Wonders will serve as the Director of Pitching. He spent one season as an assistant pitching coach on Tony Vitello's coaching staff. Before that, he worked as a pitching coordinator and roving pitching instructor for the San Diego Padres and Tampa Bay Rays.

The Director of Pitching role was previously held by Brian Bannister, who spent several seasons with the club before becoming a senior advisor to pitching for the Chicago White Sox. Bannister was not a uniformed coach for the Giants, but he was the top pitching voice in the organization. His role included influencing decisions in free agency or trades, along with guiding pitching development at the major and minor league levels.

The Giants had a lot of prominent pitching voices in the early 2020's, but did not replace that pitching acumen when they departed. Bannister was recognized for his work, but he was not the only person who helped successfully lead the Giants' pitching development for a brief period of time.

While Wonders will have the same title, his role will be focused primarily on the farm system. They have added a number of pitching prospects over the past 12 months, including Jackson Flora, Carson Bolemon, Kaden Waechter, and Ramon Marquez. The development of these arms, along with many others, might make Wonders' role one of the most important in the organization over the next couple of years.
