It has just been two days since the SF Giants shook things up on their big league roster, but so far the results have been good. The Giants got two big wins against the San Diego Padres and one cannot help but feel they were inspired by Buster Posey.
When the Giants made the decision to move on from LaMonte Wade Jr. and Sam Huff while calling up some bats from Triple-A and signing Dominic Smith, Posey gave an interesting quote to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area: "It’s time to go. I think we all believe we’re better than we’ve been with the bats the last two to three weeks. It’s time to go.”
SF Giants have been spurred on by Buster Posey's stark warning
Posey expanded on that comment a little more in an appearance on KNBR, saying: "I'm drawing on playing experience as much as anything. I think you sense certain points in the season where you need something big to happen. It just so happened last night, that's a big win."
It is only June, but it really did feel like the four-game series against San Diego could have been a tipping point for the season. The Giants' offense had been so atrocious coming into the series against a team they could be neck-and-neck with all year in the NL playoff race and they lost the first two games of the series in heart-breaking fashion.
Then, in the third game of the series the Giants were down 5-0 and it seemed like they were sleepwalking right into being swept by a team that has had their number the last few years. However, right when they needed them to, the bats came alive and the Giants came roaring back to win 6-5 on Wednesday night. It was the type of victory that you could easily look back and point to as a momentum shifter if the Giants go on to the playoffs.
They followed that up with a typical Giants victory on Wednesday afternoon, scoring three runs which ended up being enough thanks to another terrific Robbie Ray start and some solid work by the bullpen to win 3-2.
The fact that San Francisco was able to split the series after how bleak things looked is massive. They are now still right in the thick of the National League West race, just three games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers and one game back of San Diego.
Posey is the type of leader who is only going to say something when it needs to be said. That is the way he was as a player and it seems that has carried over into his role as president of baseball operations. He sensed that things needed to change and he made some moves to bring about that change. Daniel Johnson ended up making huge contributions on Wednesday while Dom Smith got a clutch hit on Thursday so two of those moves paid off in a very direct way.
We will see if the team can carry on this momentum against the Atlanta Braves, but it seems that Posey has lit a fire under this team and may have helped turn the season around.
