SF Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey has quickly remade the organization in his own vision. While he has made plenty of noteworthy moves, it is also a sign that his honeymoon phase as the head of the front office is likely coming to a close.
Buster Posey's honeymoon phase as SF Giants POBO likely coming to an end
This is not a reflection of the work Posey has done. It is just merely a recognition that when a front office takes over, there is usually a period where they are not necessarily completely accountable for the results.
More often than not, an incoming front office inherits a struggling roster. That is usually why they are the incoming front office in the first place. Ownership and fans understand that getting the organization turned back in the right direction takes time. It depends on the state of the organization, but it could span multiple seasons.
At some point, the organization becomes the vision of that front office, whether that is good or bad. At that point, that honeymoon phase ends, and the front office is accountable for the results on the field.
For Buster Posey, that might be coming very quickly. In just over 12 months in charge of the Giants' front office, he has remade the roster in his vision. Of course, there is still plenty of work to be done.
That said, the core of his roster is firmly set in place for the foreseeable future. Matt Chapman, Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, Jung Hoo Lee, and Logan Webb are under long-term contracts. For better or worse, that will be the group that leads the Giants over the next few seasons.
Posey will be tasked with finding ways to support that core. They have some needs to address this offseason. They could look to make one big move this offseason, thereby adding yet another player on a long-term deal. Or, they could look to finding value that preserves some flexibility.
Plus, Posey has hand selected his next manager in Tony Vitello. Vitello's next step will be putting together a coaching staff that adds value on the field. The Giants have quickly cycled through some of the roster holdovers from the previous regime. There probably will not be too many holdovers from last year's coaching staff, but with one or two exceptions.
Posey has the core in place. It is once again a recognizable core that fans are excited to see and support. He has his new manager. The Giants hope that the next step is to compete for a playoff spot.
