With SF Giants top prospect Bryce Eldridge currently on a tear in Triple-A Sacramento, some fans are clamoring for him to be promoted. However, president of baseball operations Buster Posey pumped the brakes on that recently.

Posey has been cautious when talking about Eldridge, making sure to praise him while at the same time reminding people that he is only 20 years old. Still, if Eldridge keeps on hitting dingers people are going to keep wanting to see him debut for the Giants.

That does not seem like it will influence Posey's decision on it one iota, though. On a recent episode of the Giants Talk podcast, Posey was asked about Eldridge and gave a similar response to his other statements on Eldridge. He was also asked if he thought his brief debut with the Giants in September of 2009 helped him at all the following season and he said that it did not as he only recorded two hits in 17 at-bats.

Eldridge could benefit from seeing big league pitching a little bit this season. But there is always the flip side of the coin where he could struggle and damage his confidence going into 2026.

Right now, the Giants have plenty of options at first base and designated hitter which are the two spots in the lineup Eldridge could potentially occupy. They have Rafael Devers, Dom Smith, and Wilmer Flores, although Flores could be a player they let go to make room for Eldridge eventually.

As long as the Giants have any sort of chance at the postseason, it seems doubtful that they would call up Eldridge unless there were a rash of injuries or he was completely tearing the cover off the ball. But if the team struggles the rest of the year and is decidedly out of it in September then it may make sense to call him up to get him a little taste of action and maybe get some extra fans in attendance down the stretch.

It seems clear that Posey and the front office do not want to rush Eldridge which is probably a wise move. The previous front office had a habit of rushing up prospects too soon and it came back to bite them.

While it would be exciting to see Eldridge this year, Posey's prudent approach is what is best for the team and what is best for Eldridge.
