Buster Posey pumps the brakes a little on big offseason signing for SF Giants

Maybe the Giants will not be super aggressive.

The SF Giants have a lot of needs to address this offseason and they have money to spend. However, president of baseball operations Buster Posey pumped the brakes a little bit on the idea that the team will spend big this offseason.

In a piece by Andrew Baggarly in The Athletic, he quotes Posey as saying, "The reality is we’re gonna need … I mean, I looked at it like this is a player, and I think I look at it even more so now: The successful teams are going to have players within their system that make an impact."

Posey also said, "I think for us to get where we want to go — and certainly don’t read between the lines and say that we’re not going to make additions, because we’ll most certainly do our best to improve pitching like always — but we’re going to need some of the Tidwells, the Whisenhunts of the world, the Tengs, the Seymours, and I’m probably leaving one or two out there, to take that next step and really contribute on the pitching side of things.”

Obviously, Posey says that there are going to be additions in his statement. But the fact that he is emphasizing improvements from within suggests that there may not be a major signing this offseason the way there was last offseason with shortstop Willy Adames signing the richest contract in franchise history.

His comments seem to reflect the reality laid out by Giants chairman Greg Johnson who poured cold water on the idea that the Giants will spend big on one individual starting pitcher. Johnson's comments have been consistent with the comments he has made in past offseasons. Giants fans are used to this by this point, but for those hoping the Giants would splurge on Kyle Tucker or Dylan Cease Posey's comments seem to shut that out.

Spending big on high-end free agents does not always work and Posey is right that they are going to need guys already in the organization to take a step forward, but they absolutely need to make some key signing or trades to fill various holes on the team.

Obviously, pitching will take precedence but the Giants also have holes at right field, second base, and first base/designated hitter. They are going to need to sign guys to fill those holes.

Maybe Posey is just trying to temper expectations, but after the Dodgers have won another World Series it seems like spending may be the only way for the Giants to be more competitive.
