Buster Posey just revealed what closer plans will be for SF Giants in 2026

They may not be big spenders in this department.

The SF Giants need to rebuild the back end of their bullpen and there are numerous avenues they can take to go about doing that. President of baseball operations Buster Posey shed some light on what strategy the Giants may employ.

Appearing on the Giants Talk podcast, Giants insider Alex Pavlovic asked Posey whether he envisioned the Giants going out and signing a big closer or whether it would be more of an open competition.

Posey said in response: "You know, it's probably more likely to come down to a competition, I think, is the way that it'll play out. But again, you know, we'll look and see what's available, either, you know, something via trade or another route.”

SF Giants likely to have closer competition in 2026

If we take Posey's words at face value, that would seem to take the Giants out of the running for some of the big relievers on the market like Devin Williams or Robert Suarez who opted out of his deal with the San Diego Padres.

Even though some MLB insiders have seen the Giants as a good fit for a proven reliever like Williams, the Giants probably do not want to get into some sort of bidding war for a closer especially since those sort of multi-year deals for closers often do not pan out.

Posey need not look any further than the $62 million contract the Giants gave to Mark Melancon to remind himself that these sorts of deals for closers carry a lot of risk.

If the Giants do opt for more of a closer competition, it seems like they will probably bring in a few relievers on one-year contracts to see if any of them could assume the role.

There are probably some internal options who could get a look like Ryan Walker who, despite some pretty bad struggles as a closer in 2025, is just one year removed from being an elite reliever. Joel Peguero could be another interesting option after he flashed some promise late in 2025.

For fans who want the Giants to spend big this offseason, Posey basically admitting the Giants will not sign a big closer may be discouraging.

But based on history and the fact that the Giants have plenty of other needs, it is probably wise to not splurge on a closer when relievers are such a fickle and unreliable breed.
