The SF Giants have made some minor moves already this offseason, and it seems like president of baseball operations Buster Posey may be taking a page out of Farhan Zaidi's book with some of the waiver claims he has made early in the offseason.
The Giants claimed outfielder Justin Dean off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers and reliever Reiver Sanmartin from the Cincinnati Reds last week. In Posey's first year on the job waiver claims were not a regular thing, but under Zaidi they were constant.
Buster Posey making SF Giants waiver moves like Farhan Zaidi
Even from the beginning of Zaidi's tenure as president of baseball operations, it was clear that he liked claiming guys off waivers. He excelled at perusing the waiver wire and finding diamonds in the rough who could make a difference for the team.
However, sometimes that constant roster churn went too far. He could focus in on pet projects that did not ultimately pan out when many fans were clamoring for Zaidi to spend big on more established players who would probably be more reliable in the long run.
When Posey took over, it seemed like that strategy of constant roster churn was over. The Giants did not make a ton of minor moves last season until they had to when they moved on from LaMonte Wade Jr. and brought in Dominic Smith to replace him.
Maybe that was a response to the way that Zaidi operated or maybe it was simply Posey and his front office trying to get more of a clearer view of the guys they had in the organization before bringing in new faces.
Now that Posey has had a year to get used to the job, maybe he is more comfortable shuffling players around. The team just traded away Mason Black after putting him on waivers and it seems like more minor moves may be on the horizon with players like Marco Luciano and Jerar Encarnacion being out of options.
We know Posey is not afraid to make big moves either. He signed shortstop Willy Adames to the largest contract in franchise history and then swung a huge trade for Rafael Devers.
But with the Giants needing to add depth to their pitching staff this offseason, maybe remaining active on the waiver wire in addition to signing bigger free agents is the right strategy as the team tries to build out adequate depth entering 2026.
