The SF Giants are going to have a new manager in 2026, but their entire coaching staff is going to look different. Could Buster Posey load up the coaching staff with key former Giants from the championship years?
News came out that the Giants are not going to interview any internal candidates for the managerial opening. Already, some key members of the coaching staff have said they will not be returning next season.
Buster Posey has chance to load up SF Giants coaching staff with familiar faces
It really only seems like the two candidates who could return are first base coach Mark Hallberg and pitching coach J.P. Martinez.
However, it would not be a huge shock if they depart with a new manager coming in which would mean the Giants would require an entirely new staff.
Obviously, a lot of this will depend on who they hire as manager, but if Posey decides to hire a first-time manager, then the decisions on who will pad out the rest of the coaching staff could end up being made in large part by the front office.
If that is the case, it would not be a huge surprise if some former teammates of Posey who were key parts of the championship years come up in discussions.
If the Giants move on from hitting coach Pat Burrell, they could replace him with another Giants legend in Travis Ishikawa. The man who hit one of the most memorable home runs in franchise history is currently the hitting coach for the San Jose Giants. It would make sense to have a familiar face like him as the hitting coach.
As for pitching coach, Ryan Vogelsong is a name that has been thrown around as a potential future pitching coach for the Giants in the past. Posey is certainly familiar with him and he has worked with some of the younger pitchers in the organization in the past so he could be a name to keep an eye on.
Another potential pitching coach option is Javier Lopez. His voice in the broadcast booth would be missed, but he definitely seems like a guy who would have a lot to offer as a pitching coach.
As for the other coaching positions, why not make Brandon Belt the first base coach just to restart the Belt Wars anew? Posey has a sense of humor so it seems like something he could do.
Pablo Sandoval as the third base coach would be amazing, but he may never stop playing some form of professional baseball.
Brandon Crawford or maybe Joe Panik as infield coach? It certainly wouldn't hurt having a Gold Glove winner helping guys out.
Who becomes manager is obviously the most pressing concern for the Giants, but it will be interesting to see how they pad out the rest of the staff and who has the biggest sway on how that staff looks. Do not be surprised if some legendary Giants get in the mix especially with Buster in charge.
