With the SF Giants in camp preparing for spring training, it certainly seems like the team is done making moves. President of baseball operations Buster Posey appeared on KNBR and defended the team's offseason additions.

Posey was asked about how the team did not make a blockbuster move like they did the previous offseason in signing shortstop Willy Adames to the largest contract in team history at the time. The former catcher provided a bit of a reality check for fans.

Posey said: "I get it, from a fan's perspective they want us to go out and sign every free agent. That sounds great in theory but it's not a reality."

It's a fair point to make, although some fans certainly took umbrage with it. Many in the comments to that KNBR clip chafed at the idea that fans want the team to sign every free agent and instead said they hoped the team could have at least landed one big name in the offseason.

Instead, the Giants had a more modest offseason. They addressed their holes in the rotation by signing Adrian Houser and Tyler Mahle, got better with their outfield defense by adding Harrison Bader, got more contact-oriented by signing Luis Arraez, and added some bullpen depth with the additions of Jason Foley and Sam Hentges.

They covered every base and did it on a budget. Whether Posey is willing to admit it or not, he had to deal with some self-imposed spending limits from ownership. There was clearly no desire to add a top tier starting pitcher and it did not seem like the Giants were ever seriously in the running for sluggers like Cody Bellinger or Kyle Tucker.

Obviously, a big reason fans are so upset is because the Los Angeles Dodgers have won two straight World Series titles and continue to add to their roster. They went out and signed Edwin Díaz and Kyle Tucker to address their deficiencies, if one can even say the Dodgers have roster deficiencies with a straight face, at closer and in right field respectively.

Two of San Francisco's biggest needs entering the offseason were at closer and in the outfield so naturally fans are going to be miffed that the Giants went shopping on the cheaper end of free agency while the Dodgers went to Zara.

Big, shiny free agents do not always lead to success, though. Perhaps Posey and the Giants will be proven right in their more modest offseason approach, but discontent fans will still be upset that the team didn't do more.
