Buster got blunt for once.

SF Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey is known for being coy and noncommittal with his answers, but he was blunt about the fact that the team is intent upon getting a shortstop this offseason.

This comes via Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle who reported on the social media platform X that Posey, "said the Giants are looking for a shortstop." Rubin also noted that Posey praised the play of rookie Tyler Fitzgerald last season who was the shortstop for much of the year, but he noted that Fitzgerald can be moved around on the diamond.

This does not come as any surprise. We all knew that the Giants were going to be in the market for a shortstop. What it mildly surprising is how direct and open Posey was about it given the fact that he was never all that forthcoming as a player.

Perhaps this is a sign that Posey will be more direct as a communicator for the Giants than Farhan Zaidi was. This is not to say that Zaidi was uncommunicative, but he could sometimes send mixed signals when his words and actions were not always in concert. This may be Posey trying to remedy that and be more upfront with fans so expectations are more clear.

We will see who the Giants end up acquiring to be their shortstop going forward. We have already heard the Giants connected to free agents like Ha-Seong Kim, who recently switched to the same agent as Matt Chapman, and Willy Adames, who has also been connected to a division rival. Adames has more upside offensively while Kim is more solid defensively but is also coming off a shoulder injury that could have him out to start the 2025 season.

Some trade options include Bo Bichette of the Toronto Blue Jays who is coming off a rough year. Less likely options via trade could be Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa, who has a complicated history with the Giants, as well as Zach Neto of the Los Angeles Angels.

No matter what, shortstop is a position the Giants must improve at. If they can get a solid shortstop and move Fitzgerald to second base that will go a long way towards stabilizing their infield going into 2025. It is nice to see that Posey is thinking the same way.
