The SF Giants got some great news recently with it becoming official that legendary manager Bruce Bochy will return to the organization as a special adviser to president of baseball operations Buster Posey.
Bochy appeared on KNBR to discuss a number of things from new Giants manager Tony Vitello to the World Series and what his new role will look like, but he may have accidentally let slip that the Giants have something special planned for former Giants first baseman Brandon Belt in 2026.
Bruce Bochy accidentally let's slip SF Giants 'special thing' for Brandon Belt
Bochy was asked how often he would be in San Francisco in his role as an adviser and he had the following to say:
"I'll be in spring training for a little bit and make my rounds to see the different affiliates. But I'll be spending some time there. Of course, special events. You know, talk to Larry [Baer] and, you know, we got some special things going on during the season, like Brandon Belt's got something. And so, you know, I'll make myself available then. And I'm looking forward to spending some time there and catching up with a lot of old friends.”
The hosts followed up with Bochy on the Belt nugget and he said, "Yeah, I think so. Yeah. I know I probably shouldn't have said anything.”
Obviously, Bochy did not go into detail on what this "special thing" could be for Belt. But maybe it will be some sort of official send-off for the long-time first baseman who was a key part of the team's World Series titles in 2012 and 2014.
Our own Jeff Young advocated that the team should give out a one-day contract to Belt so he can formally retire as a Giant. The "Baby Giraffe" was somewhat controversial amongst fans during his time in San Francisco with some fans feeling he should have done more offensively, but there is no question that he was a great Giant and deserves a nice send off from the organization and Giants fans.
It would be amazing if the Giants have some sort of ceremony for him and Bochy is there to help celebrate Belt's time with the Giants.
Bochy also talked about new Giants manager Tony Vitello and was very positive on him, saying that he met with Vitello in Tennessee ahead of his hiring and had a nice conversation with him where he came away feeling very confident in the first-time manager.
It is great to have Bochy back in the organization, though. We will see what plans the Giants have for Belt next season even if Bochy was not supposed to let it slip quite this early.
