In an inside joke, Brandon Belt became the captain during a road game against the Chicago Cubs. The longtime SF Giants first baseman mentioned that Gabe Kapler was a surprise instigator for that joke making its way to the field.
Brandon Belt mentioned a surprise SF Giants instigator in his captain shenanigans from 2021
After participating in a pre-game ceremony, Belt joined the radio broadcast (no audio) with Hunter Pence and Jon Miller. I will start by saying that Belt's unique sense of humor was a much-needed jolt to the team after a slow start.
The Giants had a lot of quiet competitors during that era, including Buster Posey and Brandon Crawford, but Belt's goofiness surely lightened the mood in the clubhouse when they needed it.
Who was behind the captain joke? Belt admitted that Evan Longoria was the brains behind the operation. That joke carried over into the field thanks to former Giants manager Gabe Kapler, who was also in attendance with the Miami Marlins in town.
Longoria had taped a "C" to Belt's uniform. The left-handed bat had no intention of going out into the field with that taped to his jersey because it would have attracted too much attention. However, Kapler encouaged him to do it, even offering to assume any potential fine. This led to a hilarious moment.
Major League Baseball has lightened up on its uniform standards because remember when Brian Wilson was fined for wearing orange cleats in 2010. The league ruled that orange was not the club's dominant color.
Anyways, Belt went out into the field with a makeshift "C" taped to his uniform. To add to the legend, Belt did what captains do. He has a tremendous game at the plate, collecting two hits, including a double and a home run, with two RBI in three at-bats in a 6-1 win. Of course, he also walked twice because that is what he did so well.
It felt like the Giants could do no wrong that year, and the captain joke was another example of that. This carried over into the following year, as Belt wore a captain's hat while being driven around in a boat during the Opening Day ceremony in 2022.
That 2021 season proved to be the best one in Belt's career. He posted a .975 OPS with 29 home runs and 59 RBI. Across 13 major league seasons, he accomplished more than the overwhelming majority of players in baseball history. This included two World Series titles and an NL All-Star nod. Plus, he was even the captain for a day.
