The SF Giants have not had a bad offseason, but compared to the Los Angeles Dodgers it looks like they have not done very much at all. Beloved Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper is clearly fed up with the team from down south.
In an interview on KNBR, the Giants' play-by-play man on television made it clear that he does not even want to discuss the Dodgers:
SF Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper is fed up with the Dodgers
Kuip was asked about the offseason the Dodgers have had, signing players like Blake Snell, Roki Sasaki, and Tanner Scott but he immediately deflected, saying he thinks the players who were announced as having made the MLB Hall of Fame were very deserving. He went on to say, "I don't have to talk about the Dodgers, I mean, I'm sick of them, I really am. I haven't even seen any of them their broadcasters, their team, I'm sick of them, I really am. And I think I'm playing into their hands by talking about them, so I'm not."
Kuip's reactions is all too relatable. After the Dodgers won the World Series in 2024 and have followed that up by somehow becoming even better on paper, is has almost been too much for many Giants fans to stomach. It really is the rich getting even richer. Many fans probably want to just bury their heads in the sand and employ an "ignorance is bliss" approach when it comes to the Dodgers.
I recently argued that the Giants should ignore the Dodgers to a certain extent because they have become such a juggernaut that what they have built cannot even be emulated or aspired to. All the Giants can do is keep their head down and do everything they can to improve gradually and build a solid foundation for success. We have seen teams have success after clinching a Wild Card spot in the postseason and the Giants still have enough talent to win somewhere in the neighborhood of 85 to 90 games.
It seems that even nationally many baseball fans have grown tired of the Dodgers and their spending. There are some who will defend them and say what they are doing is good for baseball, but it is hard to see how a sort of quasi-monopoly is good for the game.
Unfortunately for Kuip and Giants fans, the Giants will have to think about the Dodgers at least 13 times in 2025 with the first regular season matchup against Los Angeles coming on June 13th which is over two months into the regular season. Who knows, perhaps the Giants will have found their stride at that point while the Dodgers are dealing with a World Series hangover.
That may be wishful thinking, but until then we can follow Kuip's lead and just ignore the Dodgers to the best of our abilities.
