Astros firing their GM may portend SF Giants front office shakeup

The MLB season is winding to a close but some teams are getting an early start on parting ways with front office executives. The Houston Astros announced they are parting ways with their general manager Dana Brown whose contract was set to expire after this season.

What does this mean for the SF Giants? Well, perhaps they will be dismissing their GM as well.

Zack Minasian has been the GM under president of baseball operations Buster Posey the last two seasons. After a year in which the Giants could possibly tie or set a franchise-worst record if they lose 100 games or more, there are going to be some changes.

There will likely be changes to the coaching staff, but also expect some changes to the front office. Minasian may be the one to go because something tells me franchise legend Buster Posey, who is also part of the ownership group, is not getting fired just yet.

While Minasian clearly doesn’t deserve all the blame for the team’s woes, he was expected to be the guy to help guide Posey through the day-to-day operations of a big league front office. The team’s lack of activity on the waiver wire and questionable roster decisions like leaving 40-man roster spots open probably falls a bit more on Minasian than it does Posey although this has obviously been a collaborative effort in ineptitude.

Maybe Minasian could be reassigned if he’s willing to go back to the scouting department, but chances are he probably wants to go somewhere new and get a fresh start if the Giants remove him from his current role.

Who might replace Zack Minasian if SF Giants fire him?

If he did leave the Giants and San Francisco had a vacancy at the GM spot, who would they go with to replace him? The A’s parted ways with their GM David Forst earlier this month so he could be a potential candidate. He’s got a lot of experience running a team and helped build some of those solid A’s teams in the late 2010s. 

Don’t expect Zack’s brother Perry, dismissed by the Los Angeles Angels earlier this year (there sure have been a lot of turnover in the AL West this year which isn’t surprising since it’s the worst division in baseball), to come join the Giants. He was with the Angels for years and they never had a winning season.

The Giants clearly have to shake things up. A Minasian firing is not guaranteed but it wouldn’t come as a shock if the Giants try to infuse some new ideas into the organization after such a bad year.
