The SF Giants dealt with so many injuries during the 2026 season. While the team was grossly underperforming even before guys started dropping like flies, it certainly didn’t help that by the end of the season they basically only had a roster full of Triple-A guys left to play.
One hopes there’s not a repeat of that carnage in 2027, but let’s take a look at all of the players who ended the season injured for the Giants and see what their status will be going into the offseason. It’s also important to keep in mind that some of these players will have more time to recover since the looming lockout seems all but certain to push back the start of the 2027 regular season.
Every injured SF Giants player’s status going into the offseason
Willy Adames
The shortstop was dealing with a bad back, but it was an elbow injury that occurred on an awkward slide in Boston which landed him on the IL and effectively ended his season. He received a plasma injection for the elbow and should be totally fine going into next year.
Jung Hoo Lee
The outfielder was relatively healthy most of the season, but he fouled a ball off his nether regions towards the end of the season and the Giants wisely decided to shut him down. There shouldn't be any lingering effects.
Bryce Eldridge
Eldridge hit his head in a hotel in Los Angeles. He went into concussion protocol and the Giants basically shut him down out of an abundance of caution. The hope is he doesn't have too many repeat concussions because Brandon Belt showed us that can be scary.
Logan Webb
Another precautionary shutdown was Logan Webb. He dealt with a knee injury earlier in the year which put him on the IL, but after pitching in the WBC he probably just needed a little more rest and should be fine going into next season.
Rowan Wick
The Giants signed reliever Rowan Wick knowing he’d miss all of 2026 due to Tommy John surgery. He is on track to pitch again in 2027, but the Giants may decide to buy out his contract if they feel his 40-man roster spot should go to someone else.
Hayden Birdsong
The first young pitcher to succumb to an elbow injury for the Giants in 2026 was Hayden Birdsong. He should be back at some point in 2027, but it usually takes pitchers some time to get back on track after returning from Tommy John surgery.
Trevor McDonald
The second young pitcher to go down with a major elbow injury, McDonald will probably miss all of 2027 unless he’s able to come back late in the season, but the Giants may just opt for a more cautious approach.
Matt Chapman
He got shut down due to a core muscle injury that had apparently been bugging him for some time and required surgery. He should be totally ready to go in 2027.
Daniel Susac
The catcher fractured his kneecap by fouling a ball off his knee, but the expectation is that he should make a full recovery and be ready to go next season.
Harrison Bader
We all know about Bader’s foot injury, which was further complicated by a scooter crash, but he should be ready to go by spring training next season. The question is whether he will still be on the Giants.
Joel Peguero
The reliever just couldn’t get his hamstring right during the 2026 season. He’s supposed to start throwing live BPs in late October, but he could be a guy who ends up on the outside looking in after 40-man roster cuts.
Casey Schmitt
He was having a great year until he tore his meniscus, but he underwent surgery and should have a completely normal offseason. Will he be used as a trade chip, though?
Matt Gage
The lefty was doing alright early in the season, but he started to struggle and then went on the IL with an elbow issue. He’s now been fully cleared, but, like Peguero, he may get DFA’d to make room for some of the other players returning from injury on the 40-man roster.
Adrian Houser
There was a fear that Adrian Houser met the same fate as several young pitchers after he had to leave a game and was examining his elbow, but it was diagnosed as a flexor strain and he should be fully healthy by next season.
Keaton Winn
His elbow gave him fits as well but thankfully he avoided the worst. He’s set to do his normal offseason activity in November.
Jesus Rodriguez
Somewhat ironically, elbow issues also infected some position players as Jesus Rodriguez had a right elbow issue but the expectation is he will be cleared by the end of the month.
Carson Whisenhunt
He is going to miss all of 2027 after undergoing elbow surgery. The Giants will need to rely on other depth arms next season like Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson and Cesar Perdomo.
Rafael Devers
It’s kind of amazing that Devers was hitting as well as he was despite a core muscle injury, similar to Chapman’s. He underwent surgery as well so the issue should be totally fine going into next season.
José Buttó
After a scary blood clot situation which feels even more relevant after the Jalen Hurts situation in the NFL, Buttó underwent surgery and he should be good to go heading into 2027.
Randy Rodríguez
After undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2025, Rodríguez missed all of the 2026 regular season but he’s returned in the Arizona Fall League and has looked pretty good outside of his last outing which was rough as he surrendered three earned runs and did not record an out. Still, he should be back next season assuming there aren’t any setbacks.
Blade Tidwell
Yet another young arm lost to Tommy John, Tidwell will miss all of 2027. When he comes back it’s fair to wonder whether it might be smart to use him as a reliever even though he showed some promise as a starter in 2026.
That’s a lot of injuries. Thankfully, most guys should be good to go whenever spring training starts next season but the guys who will miss all of 2027 due to Tommy John might force the Giants to add more pitching depth.
