As free agency gears up, the SF Giants will be looking for ways to improve their team. Here are five big-name free agents the Giants should steer clear from, and one who they should go all-in for.

5 free agents SF Giants should avoid and one they should go after

Steer clear: Kyle Schwarber

Schwarber might be the best individual bat available this winter, but the Giants should steer clear. They already have Rafael Devers at the DH position, and don't need Schwarber as well even if his powerful bat is alluring and the thought of him mashing dingers into McCovey Cove makes the mouth water.

Steer clear: Cody Bellinger

Bellinger's inconsistency throughout his career has been a problem. He needs to display more consistency on a year-to-year basis before the SF Giants should consider signing him to a long-term deal, despite their needs in the corner outfield.

Steer clear: Pete Alonso

Alonso is an enticing name due to the production he's ben able to reach in New York. He also plays a position that is theoretically a question mark for the Giants. However, with Bryce Eldridge ready to be an every day player, it would not make much sense for the Giants to spend money at first base. Eldridge might not be a star yet, but San Francisco needs to give him time to develop into one.

Steer clear: Dylan Cease

Cease is MLB's top rated free agent starter this offseason, but the Giants should steer clear. He's been wildly inconsistent since making the move to San Diego, and it feels like there are far better options in the starting pitching market with more recent success. Plus, it seems like the Giants may not even be interested in pitchers on the high-end of the market.

Steer clear: Jorge Polanco

Polanco was fantastic for the Mariners in the postseason, but his past two years have been marked with inconsistency and injuries. The Giants do need a second baseman, and Polanco's name will surely come up, but he's not worth the price considering the risk San Francisco would be taking on.

Go all-in: Ranger Suárez

If San Francisco wants to get involved in the starting pitching market, Ranger Suárez would be their best bet. He has a 3.25 ERA in 116 starts since 2021, and has been remarkably consistent for the Phillies ever since joining their starting rotation. He'd be a solid option behind Logan Webb and Robbie Ray in the Giants rotation.
