The SF Giants have had a fair amount of All-Stars in franchise history. Some are more memorable than others, though. Let's take a look at three Giants who you may have forgotten got an All-Star nod while in the orange and black.
Die-hard fans will remember these players made it to the All-Star Game, but it is worth refreshing ourselves on some potentially forgotten former Giants All-Stars.
3 forgotten and unlikely SF Giants All-Stars from the past decade
1. Joc Pederson
Long persona non grata in the Bay Area due to his long tenure with the Los Angeles Dodgers, it took some getting used to when Joc Pederson signed with the Giants. Yet, Pederson ended up having a phenomenal first half in 2022 for San Francisco and was a starter in the All-Star Game for the second time in his career. Pederson went 0-2 with two strikeouts in the game at Dodger Stadium.
The Giants signed him for just $6 million prior to the season so it wound up being a pretty great move. Yet, it is still odd to think of Pederson being an All-Star with the Giants especially since it is still so easy to think of him as a Dodger and also due to the fact that he hat a letdown in 2023 with the Giants.
Pederson is having a brutal season with the Texas Rangers, so it seems more than likely that his great 2022 season will have been his last All-Star campaign.
2. Joe Panik
Giants fans will always love and remember Joe Panik for his incredible back-handed flip in Game 7 of the 2014 World Series. Yet, some may forget he was an All-Star in 2015.
Panik had a .312 batting average that season and was named as a reserve to the NL roster. He went 0-2 in two at-bats. It seemed like the beginning of a long and prosperous career for the second baseman, but injuries and a decline in play ultimately derailed his career.
However, the Giants may have just found their next Joe Panik in the 2025 MLB Draft.
3. Alex Cobb
Giants fans will remember Alex Cobb as a workhorse who pitched well for the team in 2022 and 2023. It is easy to forget that he was named an All-Star as a replacement in 2023. He did not pitch in the game, but it was still a nice feather in the cap for the veteran.
4. Will Smith
Back in the dark days of 2019, there was a time when left-handed closer Will Smith was a dominant pitcher for the Giants. It was the lone All-Star appearance of his career and it went poorly as he only recorded one out and gave up a home run.
It is interesting to look back on some of these names and remember how they had strong first halves and earned themselves an All-Star appearance. They are fun little trivia bits for the die-hard Giants fans out there.
