Right field has been a clear issue for the SF Giants in 2025. As a team, their right fielders rank 24th in OPS (.662), 22nd in WRC+ (89) and 18th in fWAR (0.3). For a team that is trying to contend for a division title, that level of production just is not going to cut it.
While a trade is unlikely to occur until the deadline in late July, here are three players the Giants should set their sights on as a potential upgrade on Mike Yastrzemski who may be on the hot seat after recent roster moves.
3 SF Giants trade targets to upgrade in right field
1. Taylor Ward, Angels
If the Giants want to add a power bat, Taylor Ward might be the best one out there. Ward has hit 18 home runs, putting him on pace to surpass his previous career high of 18. He's been a reliable corner outfielder for the Angels, but with free agency coming soon in 2027, it's possible the Angels could try to sell high on the power hitter this year.
It is still unclear if the Angels will sell at the deadline. At 33-35, they are only 2.5 games out of the AL Wild Card, and could still be vying for a playoff spot in late July. However, if they do sell, Ward's raw power makes him an enticing candidate for the Giants.
2. Kyle Stowers, Marlins
The Marlins have come to be a reliable seller at the deadline, and this year should be no different. Stowers, 27, has not even reached arbitration eligibility yet. If the Giants think he could be a long-term starter, it would make sense to trade for the outfielder, who is currently having a career year in Miami.
Stowers is slashing .276/.344/.466, with 10 home runs, 33 RBI and an OPS+ of 122. He would add to the Giants' offense, though poor defense brings his bWAR down to 0.7.
3. Joc Pederson, Rangers
Okay, this one might be a stretch, and it might be a terrible suggestion, but hear me out. Pederson thrived in San Francisco, finishing with a 146 OPS+ in 2022 and reaching the All-Star Game. He belted 23 home runs in a Giants uniform.
This year, Pederson has been off to one of the worst starts imaginable. He holds a .131 batting average and an OPS+ of 50. Currently on the IL, the Rangers would probably love to get rid of him. Perhaps some change of scenery with a return to a city where he has had success in the past, not to mention his native Bay Area, would be good for Pederson?
The money would be a factor here. Pederson is owed $21 million in 2026. The Giants would likely have to take on most of that money. However, it means they would probably be able to get him back for dirt cheap. If Pederson has anything left in the tank, perhaps it could be unlocked in San Francisco.
