The SF Giants have ended the month of April with a losing record. They have practically the same record as the Colorado Rockies. That is not ideal, and going forward they should think about ways to improve the team. There are three players on the team who probably have no business being on the roster.

3 SF Giants who really have no business being on the roster

Jerar Encarnacion

The Giants added Jerar Encarnacion to the roster after a strong spring training hoping he could be a nice pinch-hit option off the bench and a guy who could match up nicely against left-handed pitchers.

He has not been that at all. He’s hitting .200/.226/.233 with no homers and no runs batted in. He’s the baseball roster equivalent of that extra button on your suit jacket. You know it’s there, but are you ever going to use it? Probably not. So maybe it’s time to get rid of it.

Encarnacion seems like a fun, affable guy and his teammates seem to like him. He even does fun things like forget how many outs there are just to keep the dugout nice and light.

Heck, he even loses his glove sometimes. What a goof! But he really just doesn't add much to this baseball team right now outside of the occasional yuk.

Jesus Rodriguez is a catcher and utility man in Triple-A Sacramento who can play second base and left field. He was acquired in the Camilo Doval trade and is currently hitting .337/.408/.449 with two homers and 13 runs batted in. He’d be a better guy to have on the team than Encarnacion.

Victor Bericoto plays the same positions as Encarnacion and is hitting .298/.356/.447 with three homers and 16 driven in. I’d like to see what he could do at the big league level if given the opportunity.

There could be a temptation to call up red-hot Bryce Eldridge and designate Encarnacion for assignment, but with Casey Schmitt absolutely on fire there’s no place to put Eldridge in the lineup.

Ryan Borucki

Early in the season left-handed reliever Ryan Borucki really struggled and it seemed like he would probably get let go at some point. The Giants stuck with him and he showed some signs of improving by being effective against lefties.

Yet, the Borucki Bugaboos came back in full force on Thursday. Borucki was brought in during Game 2 of Thursday’s doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies to relieve Adrian Houser who battled after giving up home runs to the first two batters of the game.

Borucki was brought into a 2-2 game in the fifth inning with two outs and a runner on first to face left-handed slugger Kyle Schwarber. He allowed Schwarber to double, walked Bryce Harper to load the bases, and then gave up a single to Adolfo’s García which made the score 4-2.

He now has a 6.00 ERA in nine innings of work and it’s just not clear what role he serves on the team especially when the Giants have two more effective lefties in the bullpen. It’s time to give another arm a chance.

Will Brennan

The Giants added Will Brennan to the big league club when Harrison Bader and Jared Oliva went on the IL. Drew Gilbert was also called up and he has gotten the lion’s share of the playing time in center field and has done quite well.

Meanwhile, Brennan only has eight at-bats. He's yet to record a hit and has not reached base. With Gilbert doing better and Jung Hoo Lee getting hot it’s just tough to see Brennan getting very much playing time.

The Giants need to improve. These three players are not the biggest reason the team is off to a uninspired start by any stretch but it’s probably time to see if they can get upgrades from some other players in Triple-A.
