The SF Giants set their Opening Day roster and while there were a few surprises, it was pretty easy to see which way the wind was blowing by the end of spring training. However, we know that a team's Opening Day roster is never what the roster ends up looking like in late September.
There will be injuries and poor performances and trades and all sort of fun between now and the end of the season so the roster will most likely look quite different in six months. Let's take a look at three players who made it onto the Opening Day roster but will probably not last until the end of the season.
3 SF Giants who are unlikely to stay entire season with team
Jerar Encarnacion
The tall, right-handed slugger Jerar Encarnacion entered spring training knowing he needed to hit the ball well if he wanted to make the team. He did just that and earned himself a spot on the team's bench, but he has just one at-bat through six games as he was used to pinch hit for Patrick Bailey on Wednesday against the San Diego Padres and weakly grounded out.
It is tough to see how Encarnaciion will get all that much playing time with how the roster is currently configured. Rafael Devers is going to be the designated hitter every day as his hamstring has not allowed him to play at first base and Casey Schmitt has been at first base for his defense even though he had some miscues on Wednesday.
Maybe Encarnacion will see some starts at first base or he can start in left field of right field if either Heliot Ramos or Jung Hoo Lee need a day off, but his starts will probably be few and far between.
Plus, if top prospect Bryce Eldridge goes on a tear in the minors and earns a promotion, Encarnacion would almost certainly be DFA'd to make room for him. It just is hard to see Encarnacion sticking on the roster the entire season even though he has a lot of pop in his bat and seems to be well-liked by his teammates.
Ryan Borucki
Borucki was a surprise addition late in spring training. The left-handed reliever was signed by the Giants just a few days before the start of the regular season and found himself on the Opening Day roster.
He's pitched fine so far for the Giants, allowing just one earned run in 2 and 1/3 innings of work, but the Giants currently have three lefties in the bullpen and that seems unlikely to be the case for the entire season especially if Sam Hentges returns from the IL.
Jared Oliva
Yes, Jared Oliva does provide a ton of speed on the bases and can play all three outfield positions. He already has a stolen base in the regular season after stealing 14 bases in 15 attempts during the Cactus League.
Yet, he has not been in the big leagues since 2021 and he probably will not do enough at he plate in whatever limited opportunities he gets to justify keeping a roster spot.
It would not be a shock if at some point Grant McCray, Will Brennan, or Drew Gilbert get hot in Triple-A and force their way onto the roster. If they did, Oliva would likely be the odd man out.
We will see how the season plays out but it would be a bit of a surprise if these guys made it all the way to the end of the season on the roster.
