The SF Giants are trying to figure out who will make the Opening Day roster as spring training winds down. As they do that, there is still the possibility that the team could swing a trade before the regular season begins.

It would be a little unlikely since every team is more focused on its own players right now, but the Giants could still use some help in the bullpen so perhaps they could find a team interested in one of their younger players and work something out.

3 players SF Giants could trade before the end of spring training

Casey Schmitt

Throughout the offseason, there were rumors that the Giants were looking to upgrade at second base. That led to a lot of connections to guys like Brendan Donovan and Nico Hoerner but ultimately the Giants ended up signing Luis Arraez which obviously means less playing time for Schmitt.

He impressed last season at second base but could also be a starting third baseman, his natural position, for a rebuilding team in need of one. He's strong defensively and showed in 2025 that he can get hot at the plate.

If the Giants kept him he'd still get playing time but mostly as a utility guy. Trading him would give him an opportunity to blossom with a new team since he is blocked at every position in the infield right now.

Luis Matos

So far in spring training, outfielder Luis Matos has really stood out. He came into camp knowing he needed a big spring to make the team and he has delivered. Yet, he is still just competing for a bench spot which is not a role he is best suited for.

Last season he was on the bench for the Giants and he struggled to get anything going at the plate in limited playing time. He, like Schmitt, could benefit from going to a rebuilding team willing to throw him out in right or left field every day and see what happens.

Carson Whisenhunt

Whisenhunt's name came up in trade chatter during the offseason. While he was the top pitching prospect in the organization last year, he was uneven in five starts with the Giants. He came into camp showing off his velocity, but got knocked around early on in Cactus League play. His most recent outing was much better so maybe a team likes what it sees from the young lefty.

If any of these players could get the Giants a proven setup man or a reliable late-inning arm they would be wise to jump all over that because things look a little bleak in the back-end of the bullpen right now.
