The SF Giants have an obvious decision looming. That, of course, is the decision to bring Justin Verlander back to the team in free agency. Here are three reasons why the SF Giants should try their best to get the deal done as soon as possible.
3 reasons why SF Giants should re-sign future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander ASAP
1. Verlander is a seasoned vet with experience
The SF Giants did not sign Verlander last year to be their ace. Rather, they signed him to be a veteran with experience pitching in (and winning) the biggest games. That is exactly what he did for the Giants, winning down the stretch run in September and being the best starter on the team when they needed him most.
Verlander also brings years of experience and leadership, which has a massive effect on the locker room and clubhouse. He can help mentor young players and almost serve as a player/coach.
2. He pulled it together at the end of the year
The first few months, Verlander was struggling, and the Giants probably wished they had not paid him. However, Verlander pulled everything together when the team needed him to, putting togther a trio of clutch, seven-inning outings in September that kept the Giants in the Wild Card race. If not for Verlander's clutch outings, the Giants might have been eliminated much earlier.
3. Other teams are interested
The future Hall of Famer has conveyed that he wants to continue pitching in 2026. He wants to reach 300 career wins, and did not get much help from the Giants in that category this past season.
That said, Verlander finished on a high note. Free agency tends to put a lot of weight into how a pitcher finishes the season. That should be well for Verlander.
The Giants would be wise to move quickly when offering Verlander a contract, because there are other teams interested. Rumor has it, the Tigers and Astros might both be interested in a reunion with the veteran hurler, and they might not be the only ones.
Verlander is a reliable starting pitcher, which means there will be plenty of teams interested in signing him this winter. The Giants should make an offer now and secure him before another team does.
