The 2026 SF Giants went 65-97 on the season and as of yet no changes to the front office or coaching staff have been announced. While president of baseball operations Buster Posey left the door ajar to potential coaching changes in his end-of-season press conference, he also said he did not envision major changes.

We all know that apocryphal Albert Einstein quote about insanity, but it really would be a bit delusional for the Giants to expect different results in 2027 if there are not some changes made.

That’s why the Giants should be looking around MLB at assistant coaches on good coaching staffs who they could potentially lure away from their current teams. Let’s take a look at three guys who could be targets.

3 assistant coaches around MLB SF Giants should target

Brad Goldberg

The Cleveland Guardians just got bounced from the playoffs by the Tampa Bay Rays, but it is hard not to marvel at the job Stephen Vogt has done since taking over as manager in 2024. He’s led them to the playoffs every season and has made two ALCS appearances.

That whole coaching staff really seems to get the most out of its players which is why assistant pitching coach Brad Goldberg should be a target for San Francisco. He’s been on Vogt’s staff since 2024 and was promoted from bullpen coach to assistant pitching coach. He also served as the pitching coach for Team Israel in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

That Cleveland “pitching factory” is something to behold so the Giants would be wise to try to pry someone from that brain trust away.

J.P. Martinez

It was a bit of a surprise that the Giants did not retain pitching coach J.P. Martinez last year. He’d survived multiple regimes and seemed to do a good job but he ended up taking a job as the bullpen coach of the Atlanta Braves.

After seeing Tyler Mahle’s renaissance in Atlanta this year, it’s clear that the Braves coaching staff could have given some pointers to San Francisco’s so maybe a reunion with Martinez wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Jim Henderson

The Brewers are in the World Series and after seeing them unlock a version of Kyle Harrison earlier this year that the Giants were never able to, even though he got injured and struggled later in the season, so Major League Pitching Coordinator Jim Henderson would be a great add although it may be hard to lure him away from Pat Murphy’s staff.

It’s clear that whatever the Giants were doing in 2026 was not really working so it’s time to get creative and infuse some fresh ideas into the coaching staff going forward.
