The SF Giants approach the regular season with most of their roster looking fairly set except for the bullpen. It is a fairly wide open competition with only a few guys guaranteed a spot. Several spots still remain up for grabs with less than two weeks to go in spring training and a number of pitchers have looked strong.
The Giants just brought back left-handed pitcher Joey Lucchesi who was solid with the team last season. Perhaps with Erik Miller not having pitched yet and the status of Sam Hentges unclear, the team realized it needed some more depth.
There are still proven relievers out there who remain unsigned, though. Let's take a look at three free agent relievers who could give the Giants some more options in the bullpen.
3 relievers who could give SF Giants more security in the bullpen
Tommy Kahnle
Just two seasons ago, Tommy Kahnle had a 2.11 ERA in 50 appearances for the New York Yankees. He struggled a bit more last season with the Detroit Tigers as he had a 4.43 ERA in 66 appearances.
He just pitched in the World Baseball Classic for Team Israel and pitched two scoreless outings so his arm is fresh. He has a proven track record and even had nine saves last year so if Ryan Walker doesn't work out as the closer, the 36-year-old could serve as the ninth-inning man.
Maybe Harrison Bader, who also played for Team Israel, can put in a good word for him.
Justin Wilson
Left-handed reliever Justin Wilson is reportedly mulling retirement, but maybe the Giants can convince the 38-year-old to pitch one more season. It seems like he has gas left in the tank as he pitched to a 3.35 ERA in 61 appearances with the Boston Red Sox last season.
Michael Kopech
The Giants were rumored to have interest in Michael Kopech in the offseason. He was solid in each of the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers even though he dealt with injuries. If he pitched well for the Giants it would have the added benefit of poaching a Dodgers pitcher which might annoy their fans just a bit.
None of these pitchers would cost a ton and they would all bring a little bit more peace of mind when thinking about the bullpen. The Giants are probably going to have to sift through a lot of arms early in the season to land on a combination that works, so adding more guys into the mix is a positive since there is a good chance there will be a lot of turnover in the bullpen this season.
