After the SF Giants 9-3 loss to the San Diego Padres on Friday, manager Gabe Kapler shared some exciting news with reporters in his postgame videoconference. As Kapler has done all preseason, he released the team’s expected starting lineup for their next game. The lineup included pitcher Johnny Cueto, third baseman Evan Longoria, and outfielder Jaylin Davis. It would be the first appearance of the preseason for all three players.
Cueto and Longoria are two of the highest-paid players on the roster and are expected to play prominent roles this season. Longoria has been the team’s starting third baseman since he was acquired via trade in 2017. Cueto is guaranteed a spot in the team’s rotation if healthy, but has struggled to regain his peak form over the past two seasons. Davis was on the Giants Opening Day roster last season but was quickly optioned to the alternate site. Still, he’s back in a competition to be the team’s fourth outfielder.
SF Giants Jaylin Davis, Evan Longoria, and Johnny Cueto set to debut Saturday.
It is worth noting that the Giants have been cautious with their players early in the preseason and scratched some scheduled starters late. While they have not reported any injuries for Longoria or Cueto, both have had multiple stints on the injured list over the past couple of years. Davis, on the other hand, has been dealing with knee soreness.
Assuming all goes according to plan, this will be the Giants starting lineup on Saturday:
1. Tommy La Stella, 3B
2. Mike Yastrzemski, CF
3. Donovan Solano, 2B
4. Buster Posey, C
5. Evan Longoria, DH
6. Brandon Crawford, SS
7. Darin Ruf, 1B
8. Jason Vosler, LF
9. Jaylin Davis, RF
Johnny Cueto, SP
The SF Giants will be hosting the Kansas City Royals at Scottsdale Stadium in Scottsdale, Arizona tomorrow, Saturday, March 6th at 12:05 pm PST/3:05 pm EST. Hopefully, fans will get their first look at starting pitcher Johnny Cueto, third baseman Evan Longoria, and outfielder Jaylin Davis this spring.
