San Francisco Giants: President Obama Pardons Willie McCovey
San Francisco Giants Hall of Famer, Willie McCovey, was pardoned by President Obama on Tuesday.
The 79-year-old San Francisco Giants legend was one of 64 people who received pardons from the 44th President of the United States. McCovey and fellow Hall of Famer Duke Snider pleaded guilty to tax fraud in July of 1995 for not reporting income earned from signing autographs and paid appearances .
President Obama.
I thought I loved you…
…Now I know what love really means.
On one day the man is cracking jokes and congratulating the Chicago Cubs on their first World Series since 1908, the next day he is pardoning Big Mac.
Hey Obama, can you get any cooler?
No?
Okay….I guess I understand.
I happened to be scrolling through twitter today and this caught my eye:
So when I first saw this, I thought it was some weird joke. I knew that the President was pardoning and commuting (did I use that right?), but I didn’t know that one of the greatest San Francisco Giant’s of all time would be included on this list.
Willie McCovey?
A criminal?
No way.
If you had told me that there was a former San Francisco Giant who would be getting pardoned by the President of the United States I would have undoubtedly thought it was former closer, Brian Wilson. I mean I would have just had to assume that after retirement, Wilson and his “Machine” had gotten into some kinky, unorthodox crime ring and would now need the help of big Barry O’ for a chance at freedom.
Well, it wasn’t Brian Wilson and his “Machine”.
It was Big Mac, Hall of Famer Willie McCovey.
Wait…What?
…Yep…
According to the San Jose Mercury News, McCovey, along with Dodgers Hall of Fame outfielder Duke Snider, pleaded guilty to tax fraud in July of 1995. McCovey had failed to report income he had earned from signing autographs and paid appearances, and pleaded guilty to failing to list $70,000 he made from 1988-90.
Just another day, another win for the San Francisco Giants.
1. Our Hall of Fame first baseman has been pardoned for his petty crime.
2. Our team now has major street cred. (tax evasion = street cred)
3. President Obama is a big San Francisco Giants guy. Must be because we pay him a visit just about every other year…
It’s a great day to be a San Francisco Giants fan.
