San Francisco Giants in Trade Discussions With Tigers
Where there is smoke, there’s fire. The San Francisco Giants have apparently held trade talks with the Detroit Tigers. John Morosi is the first to report.
Earlier in the San Francisco Giants’ offseason, a lot of speculation came around surrounding vague comments from Al Avila about everybody being for sale, and the Tigers trying to get younger. The Giants would technically be natural trade partners with the Tigers. They have a plethora of young arms, and the Tigers have something they covet, a right handed hitting, left fielder.
According to John Morosi of MLB Network, the Giants and Tigers have held trade talks regarding J.D. Martinez. Martinez would definitely fill the Giants hole in left field, and add another right handed bat to the Giants lineup. The Giants are extremely lefty heavy, so another righty would help balance the lineup out. Morosi also reported that the Giants and Tigers discussions have not gone anywhere from initial discussions. According to him, the discussions started at the GM Meetings in Arizona last week.

J.D. Martinez would be an interesting trade acquisition for the Giants. There is a bit of a Catch-22 here for Martinez. If the Giants can do this without losing any of their top three prospects, and Joe Panik, it would be worth pulling the trigger on. But the Tigers are likely to look at the hauls other teams have gotten for lesser players, and think “Man what if we demanded a haul like that?”
The Giants however might just have to wait on it. I personally don’t think giving up Joe Panik would be a great idea. Maybe they wouldn’t even demand Joe Panik! However, the Giants wouldn’t budge if Panik was involved in a deal for Andrew Miller. If they wouldn’t do that, then they shouldn’t do that for J.D. Martinez.
One last thing to take into account: Yes, the Giants are in talks for Martinez. However, as Morosi reported, they have not gone beyond the initial discussion. They very well could have said no to Joe Panik being involved and the discussions ended. We’ll keep you updated as we hear more, but take it with a grain of salt. It hasn’t gone beyond initial discussions.
