San Francisco Giants: Jose Alguacil and Phil Nevin Added to Giants Staff

The San Francisco Giants announced today that Sacramento River Cats manager Jose Alguacil and Reno Aces manager Phil Nevin have been added to the Giants coaching staff for the 2017 season.

Alguacil will coach first base and Nevin will coach third. It is the first time either have coached at the big league level. They are replacing Roberto Kelly and Bill Hayes, who were let go by the team at the end of the season.

Alguacil spent six seasons (1993-98) as an infielder in the San Francisco Giants farm system and returned to the organization in 2007 to work as a roving instructor. After eight seasons in that capacity, he spent 2015 as the manager of the Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels. The team began the season 0-15 and yet ended the season with a winning record and missed the playoffs by a single game. Alguacil’s ability to keep the team moving in the right direction despite the losses was a big reason for his promotion to Triple-A in 2016 and his promotion again today to join the major league club.

Nevin played for Giants manager Bruce Bochy for seven seasons in San Diego. He was an All-Star in 2001 and had a career slashline of .270/.343/.472 with an OPS of .814 in 12 big league seasons, with 208 home runs. The first overall pick in the 1992 draft of the Houston Astros, Nevin had spent the past three seasons in Reno managing the Diamondbacks Triple-A affiliate. He was a finalist for their managerial job before losing out to former Boston Red Sox coach Torey Lovullo. He had also reportedly interview for the Astros vacancy a couple of years ago. Robert Murray of Today’s Knuckleball was the first to report that Nevin would be the likely replacement for Kelly if he wasn’t hired by the Diamondbacks.

This is the first hire from outside the Giants organization since Bochy brought in long time teammate, coach and friend Tim Flannery to coach third base in 2007. Flannery retired after the 2014 season, having helped the Giants to three World Series championships during his tenure.
