According to John Shea, of the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Giants will be signing FA LHP Dontrelle Willis
"I heard Dontrelle Willis will be signing a minor-league contract with the #sfgiants— John Shea (@JohnSheaHey) January 10, 2014The deal is just a Minor League deal Willis hasn’t pitched in the Majors since 2011, while with the Reds. Last season, Willis spent time in the Angels organization. He pitched with the Salt Lake Bees of the Pacific Coast League, compiling a 2-1 record with a 6.43 ERA in 4 starts. The rotation for the upcoming season is already set and this is nothing more than a depth move by Giants GM Brian Sabean. I fully expect Willis to begin the season in Fresno and will be called upon in case of an injury to one of the current starters.Willis is a 2 time National League All Star and 2003 NL Rookie of the Year. After a strong start to his career in Florida, Willis was traded to Detroit and has struggled since. If Willis pitches with the Giants at all, I fully expect him to have the same role as Chad Gaudin did in 2013. As mentioned above this is a Minor League and there really is no such thing as a bad Minor League Deal, if he doesn’t pitch well you send him to Fresno or release him outright and nothing is lost from it.Could be good no-risk move for #sfgiants to sign Dontrelle Willis, who has been working out a lot and ended 2013 in #angels AAA rotation.— John Shea (@JohnSheaHey) January 10, 2014 Dontrelle Willis turns 32 Sunday. In prime years. If he’s in good shape and figured out control issues, he could be great story. #sfgiants— John Shea (@JohnSheaHey) January 10, 2014 Would be Dontrelle Willis’ second term with #sfgiants, pitched five relief outings for 2010 AAA Fresno.— John Shea (@JohnSheaHey) January 10, 2014 Keep an eye out here for more about this signing.
