The Major League Baseball Rule 5 draft was today, and the San Francisco Giants lost one player. The good news is it wasn’t right handed relief pitcher Brett Bochy or outfielder Jarrett Parker.
Both were eligible to be selected but neither will be moving on to another team’s roster. Player’s eligible for the Major League phase of the Rule 5 draft, if selected, must be added to their new team’s 25-man for the duration of the regular season, or be offered back to their origin team for $25K, according to MLB.com.
Parker spent last season with the AA Richmond Flying Squirrels where he put together a .245/.355/.430 batting line with 18 homeruns and 60 RBI over 131 games from the left side of the plate. He hit .300/.366/.333 over 17 games in the prestigious Arizona Fall League this past October/November.
Parker, 24, has struggled with strikeouts and contact over his three seasons in the Giants farm system, batting just .249 with 480 strikeouts over that time with San Jose and Richmond, respectively.

Bochy, of course the son of manager Bruce, has compiled a 2.78 ERA over his three seasons in the San Francisco system. In 148.2 innings, Brett, age 26, has struck out 179 and walked just 42 with 26 saves for the Augusta GreenJackets (Low A), Richmond, and this past season with the Fresno Grizzlies.
The dream of seeing Bochy visit Bochy on the mound is still alive.
During the Minor League phase of the draft, the Toronto Blue Jays selected San Francisco farmhand, RHP Scott Shuman – who the Giants got last year the same way from the Tampa Bay Rays. Shuman spent this past season with Richmond and posted a 9.51 ERA over 23.2 innings.
From CSN Bay Area’s Andrew Baggarly:
San Francisco wasn’t eligible to select anyone in this year’s draft due to their 40-man roster being full.
RHP Seth Rosin — who was sent to the Philadelphia Phillies along with catcher Tommy Joseph and Nate Schierholtz for Hunter Pence — was selected during the Major League phase by the New York Mets.
Below is a complete list of players selected in today’s draft, via MLB.com. One name you might notice in the AAA phase is Russell Wilson – yes that Russell Wilson – as he was selected by the Texas Rangers.
