With the SF Giants very likely to be sellers at the trade deadline, they are certainly already looking at the farm systems of contenders around MLB to see which players they'd like to land if they have a fire sale at the deadline.
Not all prospects are created equal. The Giants seemingly did pretty well at last year's deadline when they traded Tyler Rogers to the New York Mets, Camilo Doval to the New York Yankees, and Mike Yastrzemski to the Kansas City Royals.
The Buster Posey-led front office will be looking for a repeat of that effort this season but there are a few prospects they should have their eyes on while there are a couple they would be wise to avoid.
2 young prospects Giants should pursue at deadline
SS Kaeden Kent
We recently looked at a potential mock trade between the Giants and Yankees that would send second baseman Luis Arraez to New York and one of the prospects coming back would be infielder Kaeden Kent.
The son of legendary former Giants second baseman Jeff Kent fits the profile of what this front office likes in a hitter: he makes contact and puts the ball in play.
Kent is hitting .297/.357/.431 with five home runs and 34 runs batted in for New York's High-A affiliate. The Giants already have a lot of young infield prospects but why not add another one to the mix by adding another Kent to the organization?
LHP Briggs McKenzie
The Atlanta Braves could be a potential trade partner if they have any interest in shortstop Willy Adames. The Giants would have to eat some money in a potential deal, but if they can get the Braves to part with a prospect they should try to target left-handed pitcher Briggs McKenzie.
The 19-year-old lefty is not expected to make his MLB debut until 2029 but he is a promising young arm. He has a 2.53 ERA in the minors so far this season and has a wicked curveball as well as a fastball with plenty of potential.
San Francisco already has left-handed pitcher Jacob Bresnahan making some noise in the minors but they should add anothe promising young lefty into the mix with McKenzie.
2 prospects Giants should stay away from
RHP Brooks Caple
The Chicago Cubs could be looking to do business with the Giants if they want to add a starter at the trade deadline. Robbie Ray would make the most sense since he is a pending free agent.
Brooks Caple is ranked No. 14 in Chicago's system and while he's not a bad pitcher by any stretch, the Giants already have a similar arm in Carson Seymour.
The Giants should probably try to vary the types of pitchers they have in the organization since they have three sinker-ballers in the rotation right now with Logan Webb, Landen Roupp, and Trevor McDonald so they should look for different kinds of pitchers to vary the looks for opponents.
OF Wilson Rodriguez
The Yankees have outfielder Wilson Rodriguez in High-A right now. Ranked No. 17 in their system, his low batting average in the minors suggests his offense may not play at the big league level. The Giants usually go for high-contact guys and Rodriguez simply wouldn't fit that profile.
The giants know the kind of guys they like so hopefully they can get some promising prospects at the deadline this year who can contribute down the road so the season does not feel like a complete waste.
