The SF Giants have two representatives in Tuesday night’s All-Star Game. Second baseman Luis Arraez is a reserve on the National League’s bench and Logan Webb is also on the team although he will probably not pitch.
For all the chatter about how former Giants have been amazing this season, it’s a little surprising that there are only two former Giants who made it to the All-Star Game and it’s even more surprising that they are two very obscure ones.
Tristan Peters of the Chicago White Sox made it to Philadelphia as a reserve for the American League team and Miami Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez made the NL team as a reserve.
Neither player ever appeared in a big league game with the Giants, but they were both briefly with the organization during the Farhan Zaidi years.
Peters was traded to the Giants by the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for Trevor Rosenthal back in 2022. Peters did hardly anything for San Francisco in Double-A, hitting .212/.302/.303 with one home run and 17 runs batted in.
That’s why the Giants felt comfortable trading Peters to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Brett Wisely later that year. Wisely proved to be a decent utility man for San Francisco, but who knew Peters would one day be an All-Star?
Is there an alternate reality where Giants have two more All-Stars?
He briefly made his big league debut with Tampa Bay last year but went hitless in 12 plate appearances. The Rays got rid of him for cash and sent him to Chicago where he’s been excellent. He’s hitting .301/.354/.478 with six home runs and 36 runs batted in. All-Stars can come out of nowhere.
The same thing happened with Lopez. The Giants had him in spring training back in 2024 but he did not do much and the Giants decided to designate him for assignment in early April. The Marlins scooped him up and he was solid the last two seasons with Miami but has taken a leap forward this year, hitting .334/.368/.505 with nine homers and 45 runs batted in. Lopez currently has the best batting average in MLB and the batting title race may come down to him and Luis Arraez.
Maybe there is some alternate reality where Lopez is the shortstop of the 2026 Giants and Peters is the right fielder. Their great seasons just show that guys can come out of nowhere and get hot so the Giants shouldn’t feel too bad about missing out on them especially since other teams also got rid of them, but it’s an interesting alternate reality to think about.
