10 SF Giants likely on the cutting room floor with offseason roster crunch looming

The SF Giants have been incredibly banged up this season and it has forced them to move a lot of players to the 60-day IL. Doing that frees up a spot on the 40-man roster which allows the team to call up replacements for all these injured players, but when they come off the IL in the offseason there is going to be a massive roster crunch.

There are going to be a lot of players traded or put on waivers in the offseason which means there will be a lot of turnover. Let’s take a look at 10 players on San Francisco’s 40-man roster who are likely to be on the cutting room floor.

Philip Abner

The Giants just called up Philip Abner to the big leagues after claiming him off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks recently, and he will have to perform quite well for the Giants to be willing to keep him on the 40-man roster. He has a 6.28 ERA on the year so unless he improves considerably on that then he will likely be gone.

Tristan Beck

While Tristan Beck has been on the Giants the last few years, usually shuttling back and forth between San Francisco and Sacramento with the Triple-A River Cats, it may be time to move on from him. He has a 7.07 ERA on the year and it’s not all that clear how he might fit into the bullpen picture going forward.

Spencer Bivens

Yet another familiar name from recent seasons, Spencer Bivens hasn’t had a good 2026. While he was a solid and fairly reliable innings eater in 2024 and 2025, he has a 14.40 ERA this year which may force San Francisco to cut him when push comes to shove.

Seth Lonsway

The Giants called up Seth Lonsway to make one appearance recently and he allowed two earned runs in two innings of work. He has a 5.86 ERA in the minors this season so he’s probably not a guy the Giants will want to keep on the 40-man.

Joel Peguero

Joel Peguero is currently one of the players on the 60-day IL, but he may still be a guy they choose to cut. He looked pretty good in his rookie season last year, but this season he has only appeared in 11 games due to a nagging hamstring injury. He’s struggled in the minors this year to the tune of a 7.71 ERA so the Giants may decide there’s a reason he didn’t make his big league debut until he was 28 and cut him loose.

Reiver Sanmartin

While Sanmartin has been serviceable this year and has a 4.58 ERA in 20 appearances, he’s only on the roster because of injuries to other relievers so he may simply be the odd man out.

Osleivis Basabe

Basabe came out of the gates hot when he got called up, but he has struggled since. The Giants have so many infielders on the IL right now that he will likely be gone but he showed enough for another team to potentially claim him.

Brett Harris

Just scooped up off waivers from the Boston Red Sox, Harris has hardly played in the big leagues and unless he gets called up and goes off these next few weeks he is probably gone.

Shay Whitcomb

He may have had a walk-off hit on Monday night, but Whitcomb is really just a placeholder for other infielders. He hasn’t done a whole lot but he could wind up with another team if they like his skillset.

Grant McCray

Speed and defense have never been a question for outfielder Grant McCray. Everyone just wondered when the bat might come around. It still hasn’t and it is likely that the Giants are done waiting especially after guys like Jonah Cox and Turner Hill have come up from the minors and contributed.

It will be weird to see some of these guys go since they have been with the Giants for several years, but poor performance won’t be tolerated indefinitely especially when a roster crunch is coming so these 10 guys could all very well be with different organizations in the offseason.
