The MLB offseason is almost here but it comes with the caveat that it will probably only last a month or so when the current CBA expires on December 1 and there is a lockout. Still, the SF Giants can at least dream about which players they can target during the offseason.
It’s a helpful exercise to look at a dream target, a realistic target, and a target who would be a mistake to go after just to sort of set the parameters of whats possible and what's not possible for San Francisco in the offseason.
Which free agents would be realistic for SF Giants to pursue?
Tarik Skubal
In terms of dream targets, one really cannot dream much bigger than Tarik Skubal. He’s the best arm on the free agent market and any team that gets him would be adding a two-time Cy Young Award winner into the mix.
He’s going to cost a ton of money. Some project a contract worth over $300 million total with an AAV approaching $45 million per year. That doesn’t sound like a contract the Giants would want to touch but he’s the dream option, right?
Honestly, him signing with any team other than the Los Angeles Dodgers would be a win but maybe Skubal wants to come back to the Bay Area.
Kevin Gausman
If Skubal is the “too hot” bowl of provide from Goldilocks then Kevin Gausman seems like the “just right” option. He used to pitch for the Giants and was a really solid, consistent arm with the Toronto Blue Jays since 2021. He would at least be a reliable veteran option in the rotation and could at least take the place of Robbie Ray.
Adrian Morejon
While the Giants clearly need to upgrade the bullpen after last season, it would be a mistake to go after one of the top names on the market. Lefty Adrian Morejon represents the cream of the crop and he will command an expensive multi-year contract. Maybe if the Giants were already a solid team and just didn’t have a closer that move would make sense, but they’re not.
They should make more sensible bullpen investments and Morejon would be an expensive arm who doesn’t make sense for this iteration of the Giants.
It would be nice if the Giants just operated like the Dodgers and signed all the big free agents, but they’re not so expect more Gausman-like free agent targets in the offseason.
