San Francisco Giants: Latest On Romo; WBC and Free Agency

facebooktwitterreddit

The San Francisco Giants core four of the bullpen has slowly dissipated over the past few seasons. Sergio Romo‘s injury plagued 2016, combined with his on and off ability to get guys out when it counted rather signaled the end of his “glamour years” in San Francisco.

The San Francisco Giants are most likely losing three of the core four this year, and lost one to retirement a year ago. Sergio Romo is one of the most prominent, and should go down as a great Giant. An ugly end to 2016 will forever be fresh in the minds of Giants fans, until he does something else.

Well, you will be able to see him don the Red and Green for Team Mexico in the World Baseball Classic this spring. According to Jon Morosi, Romo was one of many who have confirmed they’re playing for Team Mexico.

Team Mexico is certain to have a strong squad at the WBC this year, and you could expect Romo to appear in the later innings for this squad.

On the free agency rumors, it’s still relatively quiet. There seem to be no “credible” leads. Romo is taking his time with the process, and rightly so. There have been some rumors linking him to the Red Sox, but there has yet to be anything truly concrete.

If there was any of the “departing” bullpen free agents to return to the Giants next season, I feel like it would be Romo. It’s the only franchise he has ever known, and his veteran presence in the ‘pen could really help out the 7th and 8th inning transitions.

Whether or not Romo returns, the bullpen should be in good shape for 2017. The added veteran presence would definitely help more than hurt.
