SF Giants: Will Could Be the Downfall This Season?

1. The Bullpen

We all know that the team’s bullpen has been their Achilles’ heel this season. Far too often the bullpen has blown winnable games as Gabe Kapler has tried, mostly in vain, to arrange the pieces of the puzzle in the correct way. We should all be encouraged by the fact that the Giants are still doing tremendously well despite their bullpen’s shortcomings.

However, we all know that a strong bullpen is an absolute necessity in October. We were spoiled during the championship run by the “Core Four” of Jeremy Affeldt, Sergio Romo, Javier Lopez, and Santiago Casilla. Right now, the Giants cannot even say that they have a “Core Two.”

The team’s two best relievers, Tyler Rogers and Jake McGee, have proven shaky at times and they do not have a reliable closer in the mold of a Brian Wilson to rely on either.

The front office will almost surely try to strengthen the bullpen as we approach the trade deadline. We must hope they do, because the bullpen imploding is what led to the disaster Game 4 of the 2016 NLDS and is what prevented the Giants from making the playoffs last year.
