5 biggest Giants spring training storylines to watch

Who’s the closer?
The departure of Will Smith in free agency leaves the closer’s role somewhat up for grabs this spring. Tony Watson will enter camp as the favorite, but if he falters in the role, the options to replace him in the organization are not thrilling.
Shaun Anderson closed out a few games last season, but his overall record as a reliever was iffy at best. Emergency options include Sam Coonrod and Jandel Gustave, but they still aren’t totally proven as setup men, let alone ninth-inning guys.
Reyes Moronta would have been another option but he will miss a good chunk of 2020 after undergoing shoulder surgery late last season.
There is also Melvin Adon, who performed well in Double-A last season, but was roughed up pretty badly in Triple-A. If he shows something during the spring he could earn himself a spot on the team as well.
Of all the questions the Giants have, the closer situation may be the scariest because if they can’t hold on to the precious ninth-inning leads they do have, 2020 will feel even longer.
