San Francisco Giants Acquired: OF Joe McCarthy
Tampa Bay Rays Acquired: LHP Jacob Lopez

The Tampa Bay Rays have been facing a 40-man roster crunch for a while now. They made a number of deals at the deadline to move players who were blocked or not in their long-term plans, while addressing more immediate needs or just acquire system depth.

The Giants took advantage of Tampa Bay’s riches and turned a system-level prospect in left-hander Jacob Lopez into an upper-minors prospect with a legitimate pedigree.

Joe McCarthy, like Tristan Beck, was once a first-round draft prospect before back injuries derailed his last season in college. He flashed above-average tools across the board with a potential for a plus hit tool during his sophomore season at Virginia and he still has that type of ceiling if everything clicks.

Lopez is a funky lefty who the Giants selected out of College of the Canyons in last year’s draft. His fastball sits in the upper-80s and occasionally has touched 92 mph. However, he has an advanced feel for pitching and so far he has taken advantage of his opponents in short-season ball. His lack of stuff limits his upside, but his delivery could make him a LOOGY.
