San Francisco Giants: Midseason Top 30 Prospects (Nos. 30-21)

28. OF Mike Gerber
Age: 26
Current Level: Triple-A
Acquired: Waivers (2018, via DET)
Future Value: 35+
Gerber will always be remembered as the first player Farhan Zaidi acquired after he became the president of baseball operations for the San Francisco Giants. So far, the move has aged quite well. Gerber has always shown above-average to plus power from the left side of the plate and he’s really mashed for the Sacramento River Cats this season.
In 70 Triple-A games, Gerber already has 42 extra base hits, including 17 home runs. He has always walked at a decent clip throughout his minor league career, but his power comes with a lot of swing-and-miss. In his cup of coffee with the Giants earlier this season, he struck out in over half of his trips to the plate.
Gerber is an above-average defender in the outfield corners and is passable in center field, making him a very strong fourth outfielder candidate. He’s shown some decent platoon splits as well throughout his career, so that could be an avenue to big league time as well.
In the end, it will come down to whether Gerber can make enough contact at the MLB level to tap into his power and get his glove on the field.
