In a new regular monthly feature, Steve Klein will highlight some standout performers for the San Francisco Giants and explain why they are deserving of praise.

With the team struggling to a 12-17 record in the first month of the season and sitting in last place in the NL West standings, it is fair to say things have been better for San Francisco Giants fans.

Even the most partisan supporter would have expected this season to have its fair share of lows, to go along with the occasional high. Still, it has at times been difficult to see the wood for the trees, and to maintain a sunny outlook about the season to come.

There have been some positives though, both individually and as a team. In what is fast becoming a transitional year, it is important to cling to those positives to stay sane!

Each month, we will celebrate those positives in a feature that will highlight the best hitter, best pitcher and best defender of the month, along with the best prospect performance and a champagne moment.

Who was the best hitter in a stagnant offense? Who was the top pitcher on a surprisingly effective staff? Which prospect is providing the most reason for optimism?

All of these questions and more will be answered in the following April awards article.

We’ve also included the handful of games that were played at the end of March for good measure.

Let’s dive right in with our first-month MVP.
