Andrew Suarez was the less impressive of the two rookie starters last year for the San Francisco Giants. He showed us flashes of impressive pitching, but also got knocked around quite a bit as well. However, he was called upon nearly a year earlier than most expected him to be ready for.

He certainly does’t have the value or intrigue of a Dereck Rodriguez, but he may appeal to teams desperate for a solid 4th or 5th starter who is young and not too expensive.

A 4.49 ERA, especially when your home turf is Oracle Park, is not going to jump off the page at teams. Suarez would definitely have to be paired with a Smith or Watson or someone else to reap the right handed outfielder the Giants seek.

Some have thrown D-Rod’s name into the running of players the Giants may consider trading. I think trading Rodriguez would be a grave error. He is the most exciting young talent on the team, and I really want to see him in a Giants uniform for a long time.

Unquestionably, he has more value than Suarez, and arguably even more than Smith or Watson. Plus, I don’t see any names being thrown around that would be worth trading Rodriguez.

Suarez I’d be much more comfortable parting ways with even though he doesn’t have the same value. I don’t anticipate Suarez being traded, but he is definitely an option.
