The chances of McCutchen going to the Phillies took a hit on Friday when Philadelphia made a move to acquire Justin Bour from the Miami Marlins.

However, Bour may be nothing more than a bench bat for the Phillies who could still use an upgrade in the outfield and another solid bat off the bench.

Nick Williams would be the guy he’s looking to replace with the Phillies, and the 24-year-old has actually played much better as of late. That might be another reason why the Phillies would be hesitant to acquire McCutchen.

Williams is hitting .260 this year in 312 at-bats with 38 runs scored, 8 doubles, 16 home runs, 44 RBI, 2 stolen bases, and a .330 OBP.

I still believe McCutchen would be an improvement over Williams, but by how much is the question the Phillies have to answer.

Williams is a lefty, so you could potentially create a platoon situation with him and McCutchen.

There honestly aren’t many National League teams that need outfield help, but the Phillies could use the veteran presence on a young team.

National League teams get a first shot at McCutchen through waivers, and the Phillies are the only team I see taking a chance on him.
