Mark Melancon

Melancon’s forearm injury has been difficult to evaluate. As soon as he went on the disabled list, it did not appear as if this was going to be a short-term injury. It also seemed like this injury could even knock him out for the season.

Since his stem-cell injection, he has been slowly recovering. He has pitched in 4 scoreless minor league appearances. The fastball velocity is down a tick. This is a concern, but it could be part of building up arm strength again. It appears that he is set to rejoin the Giants on Friday.

Bumgarner sustained a freak injury in Spring Training. A ball off the bat of Whit Merrifield struck Bumgarner’s hand and broke his knuckle. That poor baseball. Bumgarner hit Merrfield one time in Little League, so perhaps this is payback on Merrifield’s part.

Bumgarner dazzled in his rehab appearance. He struck out 8 in less than 4 innings of work for Sacramento. It seemed like that was going to be the only appearance he would need. However, the Giants are giving him one more rehab outing to build up arm strength. He is set to return on Tuesday.
