First Half Awards for the San Francisco Giants: ROY, Cy Young & MVP

Cy Young – Jeff Samardzija
There isn’t a San Francisco Giants starting pitcher with an ERA under four in the first half of the 2017 season. With the exception of Bumgarner who only threw 27 innings before getting injured.
But of those who qualify, Samardzija has had the best year so far for the Giants. He has a 4.58 ERA in 118 innings with 127 strikeouts and 11 quality starts. All of those are tops on the San Francisco Giants.
Unfortunately, the offense has let down Samardzija in a lot of his starts as he also leads the team with 11 losses.
Samardzija has given up quite a few hits (122), but has been able to limit damage by only walking 14 batters all year. Hopefully he continues to pitch this well in the second half and gets some better run support.
There really wasn’t much competition for this award as it’s been a terrible first half for the San Francisco Giants pitching.
Looking back at the numbers, George Kontos has had a pretty good first half. He leads all San Francisco Giants relievers with 43 innings pitched. He has an ERA of 3.14 and a WHIP of 1.26 with 47 strikeouts.
It looks like Bumgarner is ready to come back for the second half of the season. If he pitches anything like he did to start the year, he’ll be the runaway winner for this award at the end of the year.
