Jacob Heatherly

And finally, The 3rd Man In has the San Francisco Giants taking high school pitcher Jacob Heatherly in the first round.

Heatherly is from Cullman, Ala. and recently struck out 17 batters in the first round of the state playoffs. He was named The Cullman Times Athlete of the Week back on April 5 after striking out 13 in five innings in a game on Tuesday and then seven more over 5.1 innings in a game later that week. He only allowed 4 hits in those two outings.

It was the second time he was named to the award this year as he leads Cullman High School who is the No. 1 team in Class 6A.

Heatherly is right up there with Hall as one of the best left-handed high school prospects in this draft. If the Giants miss out on Hall, they very well could fall back on Heatherly.

The other mock drafts have Heatherly going at 14 to the Kansas City Royals and not in the first round at all.

As with all high school prospects, a lot depends on their signability. Heatherly is currently committed to play at Alabama, but with that team in disarray under a new head coach, I think he goes pro with the right amount of money offered.

We’re still a little over a month away from the 2017 MLB Draft, which starts on June 12. It will be interesting to see what direction the Giants go. That could determine how the front office views the future of this team.
