Stock Down

Matt Cain

My word it pains me to write this, but I don’t see things going all to well for him right now. He has a WHIP of 2.0, and has given up 4 earned runs in four innings of work. Granted, Madison Bumgarner has been terrible to start this spring. However, we haven’t been watching Madison decline like Cain has for the last three years. Bumgarner had a rough start to spring last year, and was incredible in 2016.

Cain, doesn’t have that type of recent pedigree to fall back on. He’s been a question mark for the last three seasons. That’s tough. I think it would be different if Ty Blach hadn’t looked stellar in his first few appearances. There is still an entire month of Spring Training left. So it’s not time to freak out about Cain. However, there still is cause for concern. Unfortunately his stock is still down.

Josh Osich/Cory Gearrin

Both have been pretty bad so far this spring. Combined, in 7.2 innings of work in spring, they’ve given up 13 hits, 10 runs, eight earned runs, and walked eight. That’s really bad folks. Gearrin struggled a bit in 2016, and Osich had a pretty significant setback last year as well. Unfortunately, I just don’t think these two are headed in the right direction right now. Players like David Hernandez and eve Neil Ramirez definitely have the “upper hand” on this duo.
