Live Arms in the Bullpen

As I’ve pointed out several times this offseason already, I think the biggest issue for the San Francisco Giants going into the season is the bullpen.

I know they went out and signed a shutdown closer in Mark Melancon, but it’s the rest of the bullpen that I’m worried about.

More from Around the Foghorn

The San Francisco Giants had the worst K/9 rate from relievers in the National League last year at 7.9. That was way off the top of the list in the Chicago Cubs who led the NL at 9.92.

in today’s game you need relief pitchers coming out of the bullpen with live arms that can get you a big strikeout. The Giants just didn’t have those kinds of guys coming out of the bullpen last year, and I’m not confident they have those guys going into 2017.

This should be a really competitive spring for those fighting for a spot in the Giants bullpen, and a lot will come down to who has the best stuff.

You always need your guys that can come in and get you a ground ball, but the Giants need more guys who can come in and slam the door on a rally.

Too many times last year we had bullpen guys come in with inherited runners and let them score.

I will be looking to see who can come out of the bullpen and strikeout guys on a consistent basis with nasty stuff this spring.
