Jay Bruce

Henry Schulman of SFGate.com has reported that the Giants have put in a call to the Reds about their left handed slugger, Jay Bruce. Bruce is a very interesting option for San Francsico, as he provides a contrast to many Giants hitters, where power is the priority over contact. Bruce is hitting .278 but has 17 dingers and we aren’t even at the all star break yet. Bruce has the type of swing that could help him fit in nicely at AT&T Park. It also helps that the right fielder has a respectable .971 fielding percentage. Bruce currently is in the fifth year of his 6 year contract and he is set to be paid $12.5 million dollars this season, and $13 million dollars next year. Bruce had surgery on his knee back in 2014, but seems to have gotten over his torn meniscus he was dealing with. If the Giants traded for Bruce, they most likely wouldn’t most likely wouldn’t pay for all of the contract for this season.  If the Giants can find a way to get Bruce without having to pay all of that hefty year contract, at least for this season, I could see this trade get some traction. San Francisco wants healthy outfielders down the stretch, and Cincinnati is a team in rebuilding and is looking for as many promising prospects as possible. At the end of the day though, Bruce is getting paid too much money and would cost a good amount in prospects as well. The Giants are thin in prospects as it is and are already over the luxury tax threshold. I don’t see the Giants following through on this deal.

Verdict: Sell
