SF Giants: Bubble Players Most Likely To Make The Roster

Gorkys Hernandez was a pretty highly touted prospect coming out of Venezuela. He signed with the Detroit Tigers in 2005 as an 18-year-old. He was traded twice before even taking a swing in the majors, first to Atlanta, then to Pittsburgh. He finally made his debut in 2012 as a 24-year-old, and struggled big time. In 25 games, he hit .083, and was traded to the Marlins at the deadline. He played 45 games, hit .212 with 3 home runs, but was traded to the Royals a year later. In 2014, he was traded to the White Sox, without having played a game since 2012, and resigned with the Pirates later that off-season.
Needless to say, it’s been a journey for Hernandez. It does seem like he may have found a home here in San Francisco, though. In 20 Spring Training games, he has hit .318/.400/.477 with 3 doubles, 2 triples, 4 RBI, and 4 stolen bases. He is trying like heck to win a spot on the opening day roster, and while it may be a long shot, he could do it. He has proven that he can run a bit, stealing 4 bags in 4 attempts. The job he is trying to win is one that is crowded, and he is battling two homegrown guys in Williamson and Jarrett Parker.
It’s going to be tough for Hernandez, but he has impressed the Giants. If he does not make the team, he may be a late season call up. He could play a role where he pinch runs or plays a couple of days.
