San Francisco Giants:Options For Last Spot In The Bullpen

It’s always a good thing when a baseball team knows that 92% of their roster is set. As the San Francisco Giants move into spring training, there might be a competition for one reserve and one more arm. Let’s take a look at the ones who will battle it out. First we’ll look at pitchers:
As much as the team wants to finalize the roster sooner rather than later, they have had a keen eye for talent in the recent past. Signings like Ryan Vogelsong, Andres Torres, and even last year’s Justin Maxwell, all were given an opportunity to win a job coming into spring training. That is what is needed in sports to create that drive during the exhibition season.
Here are the locks(barring any trades): Madison Bumgarner, Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzija, Matt Cain, Jake Peavy, Hunter Strickland, Santiago Casilla, Sergio Romo, Javier Lopez, Josh Osich, and George Kontos. That is 11 pitchers on a probable 12-man staff.
So the team has pretty much sewn up the starting rotation. But the bullpen still has one spot that is still in question. And that is only if the Giants and Kontos’ arbitration case gets bloody, or if the team decides that Chris Heston is better off starting in Sacramento.
